An Influential Mentor

Diya’s high school principal Mrs. Mary Roy, mother of author Arundhati Roy, was a pioneer in her field and a leading feminist voice in India. She was the plaintiff in the first lawsuit which went all the way to the Supreme Court of India and ensured equal inheritance rights for Christian women in India.

Mrs. Roy encouraged her students to do something different, instead of pursuing more conventional opportunities in medicine and engineering. She nudged Diya toward pursuing a career in human rights law. While Diya didn’t end up doing human rights law, she feels that immigration comes close.
