On September 19, 2025, the Department of Labor (DOL) launched Project Firewall, a new initiative that aims to protect American workers by ensuring employers prioritize the hiring of qualified Americans and holding employers accountable if they abuse the H-1B program.
The Secretary of Labor will personally certify the initiation of investigations where reasonable cause indicates employer non-compliance. Violations may result in the collection of back wages, the assessment of civil money penalties, and/or debarment from future use of the H-1B program.
Project Firewall will be led by the Office of Immigration Policy, Employment and Training Administration, and the Wage and Hour division in collaboration with other federal agencies, including the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
