The Department of Homeland Security has published a Federal Register notice (FRN) for public inspection. The FRN was published on May 19, 2022 and designates Afghanistan for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months. The designation will start on May 20, 2022 and last through November 20, 2023.
To qualify for TPS, an individual must:
- Be an Afghan national, or someone without a nationality that last habitually resided in Afghanistan;
- Have lived in the United States continuously since March 15, 2022; and
- Pass security and background checks.
TPS provides eligibility for employment authorization and a stay of deportation.
