Best Practices for Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record: For Faster Processing of Employment-Based Adjustment of Status Applications

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced it will strive to use as many employment-based visas as possible in fiscal year (FY) 2022, which ends September 30, 2022.

USCIS is working closely with the United States Department of State to process employment-based immigrant visas for individuals based outside of the United States. The agency also released reminders for individuals in the United States who are eligible for employment-based adjustment of status regarding Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record:

  • Individuals with a pending Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status should not submit Form I-693 to USCIS unless the agency requests the form. USCIS will directly contact those individuals who apply for employment-based adjustment of status without Form I-693 and have a visa available.
  • Individuals that submitted a Form I-485 without a valid Form I-693 and have a visa available should obtain a medical report by visiting a civil surgeon and be ready to submit the report when requested. This will help with processing delays for people that are eligible to adjust status.
  • New adjustment of status petitions should include Form I-693 at time of filing.
  • Form I-693 is valid for two years from the date it is signed by a civil surgeon.

Fiscal year 2022 green card processing

USCIS may be able to use all employment-based immigrant visas in FY 2022 despite the elevated annual number available. More information is available on the USCIS FAQs website.
