The Department of State (DOS) is set to begin the much-awaited Stateside Visa Renewal Pilot Program on January 29, 2024. Only 4,000 slots have been set aside for the first stage of the program.

The DOS’s Stateside Visa Renewal pilot program will be available to 20,000 H-1B visa holders only. This program will enable visa stamping within the United States without having to travel and obtain an H-1B visa at US Consulate abroad. The DOS has released the following related to the renewal program, including that:

  1. The program is limited to nationals of countries that obtained an H-1B visa from a US Consulate in India between February 1, 2021, and September 30, 2021; and
  2. Individuals that obtained H-1B visas from a US Consulate in Canada between January 1, 2020 and April 1, 2023.
  3. Pilot program excludes those in H-4 dependent status.

Eligible H-1B visa holders will still need to complete the Form DS-160 and pay the applicable fees with the Department of State. The DOS is set to close the program on April 1, 2024.
