US No Longer Requires a Negative COVID-19 Test for International Air Travelers

By: Ishan Anand

The United States government will no longer require international air travelers to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before boarding their flight to the US. International travelers departing from their point of origin on or after June 12, 2022, at 12:01 AM EDT will no longer have to submit a negative COVID-19 test pre-departure when arriving to the United States from a foreign country.

Foreign nationals must still show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter the United States by air, land, or ferry travel.

Background
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued guidance directing all travelers to submit a negative COVID-19 test before boarding an international flight. This order originated during the early stages of the pandemic when there was no  COVID-19 vaccine and the disease was more uncertain.

the new policy
As COVID-19 vaccines are now readily available and the symptoms of new COVID-19 variants are milder, the CDC has eliminated the negative test requirement for international air travelers entering the US. The new policy will take effect for all aircrafts departing on or after 12:01 AM EDT on June 12, 2022.

conclusion
Due to the volatile nature of the pandemic, the CDC may continue to update policy as needed. The Chugh, LLP immigration team will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates. For case-specific travel questions, please contact your Chugh, LLP immigration professional.
