TEMPORARY POLICY EXTENDED ALLOWING CERTAIN US CITIZENS TO ENTER THE US ON AN EXPIRED PASSPORT

By: Min Kim

The United States Department of State has extended a temporary measure which allows certain US citizens to enter the United States on an expired passport. The policy will be in place for return travel through March 31, 2022. US citizens may qualify if their passports expired on or after January 1, 2020, and they are currently abroad.

Certain criteria apply to take advantage of the policy. Travelers should reference country-specific resources for more eligibility information.

US citizens cannot use expired passports to travel from the US to any international destination, or to travel between foreign countries except for airport connections on the way to the US or US territories.

All travelers entering the US from abroad must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test to enter the country regardless of vaccination status.

Citizens may reference the US State Department’s passport processing times website.
